One of the many perks that come with being a part of ISC is getting to enjoy the delicious food that we prepare together. On Friday, November 8th, an Okonomiyaki Party was held at Hawaii Tokai International College as a way for Tokai students and local students to interact and bond over savory Japanese food and fun games. The party began with a quick icebreaker in which we introduced ourselves to everyone and from there, split up into groups of 4 and went off to start cooking.
The food we prepared that day was Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き, o-konomi-yaki), a Japanese savory pancake containing a variety of ingredients such as flour, grated nagaimo, water or dashi, eggs and shredded cabbage. It usually contains other ingredients such as green onion, meat, octopus, vegetables, and more. What was interesting as we went around was that each group seemed to be making their own version of Okonomiyaki. It’s always nice to try out different flavors and compare them to find the best one. Everyone at the event seemed to be having a great time talking, preparing, and cooking. Towards the ending, most of the groups finished early so we began to clean up. Then we gathered to take a group picture and hung out for a bit before wrapping up the event.
Food naturally brings people closer together and it allows us to become immersed in the culture, learning the process of preparing dishes from scratch— all-the-more rewarding to enjoy with friends! We’re thankful to the Japanese Committee who worked hard with coordinating the event and look forward to more fun opportunities in the future.
